Six teams to play in sub-state volleyball matches

Six high school volleyball teams from Shelby County participated in Alabama High School Athletic Association region tournaments over the weekend and all six were victorious in win-or-go-home matches to advance to the sub-state round of the playoffs Thursday, Oct. 21.

Winners in the sub-state matches will advance to the Elite Eight, which will be held Oct. 27-28 at the Pelham Civic Complex.

Oak Mountain hosted the Class 6A, Region B tournament Oct. 16 and defeated Vestavia Hills in the championship match. The Eagles (54-18) will host Hewitt-Trussville in a Class 6A sub-state match at 6 p.m.

Briarwood Christian and Chelsea met in the Class 5A, Region B tournament championship match Oct. 16, where the Lions defeated the Hornets for the second time in the span of five days, at Central High School in Tuscaloosa.

Briarwood Christian (19-17) will host Spanish Fort in a Class 5A sub-state match at 4 p.m. Chelsea (17-25) will host Gulf Shores in a Class 5A sub-state match at 5 p.m.

Calera advanced to the championship match of the Class 4A, Region B tournament to clinch its first-ever home match in the sub-state round of the playoffs.

The Eagles (15-14), who fell to host Jemison in the Class 4A, Region B title match, will host Alabama Christian Academy of Montgomery in a Class 4A sub-state match at 3:30 p.m.

Montevallo and Indian Springs each qualified for a spot in the sub-state round of the playoffs at the Class 3A, Region B tournament at Marbury High School.

The Bulldogs (22-6), who defeated Marbury in the Class 3A, Region B tournament championship match, will host T.R. Miller in a Class 3A sub-state match at 4 p.m.

Indian Springs (16-11), which fell to Montevallo in the semifinals before defeating Greensboro in the Class 3A, Region B tournament consolation match, will travel to Trinity Presbyterian School in Montgomery in a Class 3A sub-state match at 5 p.m.
