UM should have spot at the top

The University of Montevallo is a special place, one that holds strongly to its tradition as an educational leader in this county, this state and this country.

UM is considered one of the best universities in the South by U.S. News and World Report, among many other reputable organizations. Away from academics, UM has thriving athletic programs as well as a vibrant campus atmosphere, including such favorite events as College Night.

A special place such as UM deserves a special leader, and that seems to be what UM is getting in Dr. John W. Stewart III.

Stewart looks to increase enrollment by 500, thereby adding $5.5 million to the university’s revenue — a smart way to add to UM’s coffers without overwhelming the campus. Stewart also has a 10-year plan to lead UM to a place where it will be considered one of the top 10 universities in its peer group.

We encourage Dr. Stewart, as well as all of UM’s students, faculty and staff, to work hard to make those dreams a reality. Support is coming from all across the Shelby County community.

For years, UM has been on a steady path of improvement. Hopefully Dr. Stewart is the person who can help push the university to its pinnacle—and keep it there.
