A group of local volunteers are looking to help their neighbors in need prepare for the upcoming winter months during an Oct. 30 fundraiser in Alabaster.

During the Coats and Cans charity drive, which was organized by EXIT Realty Home and Business Realtors Kelly Gleber and Ann Capps and Assurance Financial employee Gina Watts, the volunteers will collect gently used coats and non-perishable canned food items.

The event organizers will then donate all items collected to Oak Mountain Missions Ministries in Pelham, which works to provide food, clothing, financial assistance and many other services to those facing difficult times throughout the Birmingham metropolitan area.

Coats and Cans, which will feature door prizes, will take place from 1-5 p.m. at 241 Kensington Lane in the Sterling Gate subdivision in Alabaster, Gleber said.

“I just love to help people,” she said. “I heard about Oak Mountain Missions, and I loved what they were doing to help others.”

By stocking up on coats and food items, Oak Mountain Missions will be better prepared to help those in need during the cold-weather months ahead, Gleber said.
