Montevallo women’s soccer falls in Peach Belt tournament opener

The University of Montevallo women’s soccer team ended its season with a 2-0 loss on the road at the University of North Carolina in Pembroke in the opening round of the Peach Belt Conference tournament Nov. 2.

Freshman midfielder Asgerdur Palsdottir led the Falcons (6-11-2) with two shots on goal in the final match of the season. Junior midfielder Denise Mannion, and sophomore forwards Paige Scott and Nicola Stolworthy finished with one shot on goal each.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Maxwell recorded one save in the loss for Montevallo, which entered the tournament as the sixth seed.

UNC-Pembroke, the tournament’s third seed, scored two goals in the first half and led throughout the match.

UNC-Pembroke forward Anna Svennson scored the Braves’ first goal when she netted a rebound attempt off the right goal post in the 22nd minute. Midfielder Sheena Mature recorded an assist on the goal.

Mature pushed the lead to 2-0 when she received a pass from forward Rebecca Womack in the center of the box and fired a shot past Maxwell into the left side of the net in the 41st minute.
