Evangel girls open basketball season with victory

The Evangel Christian School girls’ basketball team tipped off its 2010-2011 season with a 74-60 win on the road Nov. 8 at Cullman Christian School.

The Lightning fought back from a 16-point first deficit in the first half to defeat the Lions in a game pitted defending Alabama Christian Sports Conference champion Evangel against the defending Alabama Christian Education Association champions from Cullman.

Abby Letson led the way for Evangel with 27 points, 16 rebounds, six assists and five steals.

Letson scored 12 points in the third quarter as the Lightning (1-0) completed their comeback and took control of the game.

Rainey Ketcham finished with 20 points. Katherine Stockman added 14 points and nine rebounds for Evangel, which won the ACSC championship last year in its first season in the league.

Yancy York paced Cullman Christian with 24 points. Haley White contributed 14 points and Jordan Canady had 13 points.

Evangel’s next game will be its conference opener at First Assembly Christian School of Ashland on Nov. 19.
