On Saturday, Oct. 9, children throughout the metro Birmingham area met at the Macy’s Atrium to play chess in support of the National Chess Day celebration across America. The entry fees, totaling $420, were donated to the Children’s Hospital Children’s Harbor program.

The goal of the scholastic tournament was to promote chess, help children achieve their best and support a charitable cause-Children’s Harbor. The children received gift cars, participation certificates, t-shirts, gift bags, trophies and medallions for their competitive chess play.

Several Shelby County area students participated in the tournament. They included Primary K-4 competitors: Aidan Ganesh, second place, Valley Elementary; Neil Furman, third place, Valley Elementary; Easan Ganesh, fifth place, Valley Elementary; Abby Camlic, sixth place, Valley Elementary; and Novice K-8 participants: Wesley Brown, first place, Thompson Middle; Eric Marin, second place, Oak Mountain Intermediate; and Benjamin Boone, fifth place, Oak Mountain Intermediate.
