High school basketball roundup: Spain Park girls shoot past Oak Mountain

The Spain Park High School girls’ basketball team used a hot streak from beyond the arc to defeat Oak Mountain 59-42 in high school basketball action Dec. 10.

The Jaguars broke the game open with 3-point baskets in the second quarter to turn a close game into a 25-9 lead with less than four minutes remaining in the first half.

Oak Mountain cut the lead to single digits by halftime and kept the outcome of the game in doubt throughout the third quarter before Spain Park outscored the Eagles 13-6 in the final period.

Colby Ryan led the Jaguars (5-4) with 18 points in the victory.

Jessica Freeman added 17 points. Ashley Gaston contributed eight points and Whitney Gulledge chipped in six points.

Lay Watts led the Eagles (6-2) with 19 points.

M.K. Shealy and Maegen McDanal added six points each. Mackenzie Garmany chipped in five points.

Pelham defeats Hueytown

The Pelham High School girls’ basketball team defeated Hueytown 47-29 on Dec. 10.

Sydney Days led the Panthers (2-7) with 16 points.

Carlie Walker added 14 points.

Shelby County defeats Chelsea in area contest

The Shelby County High School girls’ basketball picked up a Class 5A, Area 7 victory Dec. 10 following a 63-38 win over rival Chelsea.

Keyanna Gayden and Aulicia Nunn led the Wildcats (8-1 overall, 1-1 in Class 5A, Area 7) with 12 points each. Gayden also grabbed eight rebounds.

Alysia Perkins and Alexis Lewis added 11 points each. Lewis grabbed eight boards and Perkins finished with five rebounds.

Hallie Brown contributed 10 points and seven rebounds.

Amanda Mock led Chelsea (1-5 overall, 0-1 in Class 5A, Area 7) with nine points and nine rebounds.

Calera falls to Oak Grove

The Calera High School girls’ basketball team fell to Oak Grove 59-51 on Dec. 10.

Dianna Rutledge led the Eagles (0-3) with 11 points.

Kingwood Christian falls to Sparta in tournament

The Kingwood Christian School girls’ basketball team fell to Sparta Academy 42-29 in its opening game of the Wilcox Academy tournament Dec. 10.

Whitney Gillespie led the Lions (2-6) with 13 points.

Casey Whitmer added 11 points.

Coosa Valley Academy defeats Escambia Academy

The Coosa Valley Academy girls’ basketball team recorded a 57-51 win over Escambia Academy on Dec. 10.

Lauren Archer led the Rebels (5-1) with 20 points. Archer also grabbed eight rebounds.

Jordan Smiley finished with a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Kaylyn Rich added 11 points and nine boards.

Amelia Ripley contributed 10 points in the victory.

Evangel Christian defeats rival Hope Christian

The Evangel Christian School girls’ basketball team defeated rival Hope Christian 53-20 in an Alabama Christian Sports Conference game Dec. 10.

Abby Letson led the Lightning (6-0 overall, 5-0 in ACSC) with 25 points. Letson also grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds.

Katherine Stockman added 14 points and 11 boards.

Melinda Mahan led Hope Christian (4-2 overall, 2-1 in ACSC) with five points.
