Dessie Mae Smitherman, age 87, of Montevallo, passed on Dec. 25, 2010.  She spent Christmas day with the Lord. Dessie Mae was born on July 21, 1923. Dessie Mae is survived by her daughters, Judy (Dan) Brantley and Peggy (Wayne) Brantley; son, Jeff (Daina) Smitherman; sister, Florence Smitherman; and sister-in-law, Naomi Vaughn.

Dessie Mae is preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Smitherman and her eldest son, D.C. Smitherman. She was a grandmother to nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Dessie Mae was a life-long member of Shady Grove Baptist Church located in Randolph. She was a joy and had many lasting friendships throughout her life. The famliy would like to show special thanks to these friends and family members that became caregivers in her final days: Tootie Alexander, Reba Austin, Debbie Chandler and Johnnie Wallace.

Dessie Mae was very passionate about Alabama football and there is no doubt that she is yelling “Roll Tide Roll” from Heaven’s gates. Services were officiated by Pastors Johnny Horton and Kirk Smith. Visitation will be held on Dec. 27 from 6-8 p.m.  at Shady Grove Baptist Church. The funeral will be held on Dec. 28 at 2 p.m. Dessie Mae will lie in state one hour prior to service.
