The city of Chelsea and Faith Presbyterian Church on Valleydale Road have one thing in common: they’re starting the new year off recycling.

Chelsea will recycle old electronics and appliances during its first electronic recycling day Jan. 8, taking all electronics, printer cartridges, CDs, household appliances, computers and all metals, such as filing cabinets.

The city will also take washers, dryers and refrigerators — all typical hard-to-recycle items. The event will be at Chelsea City Hall from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Faith Presbyterian Church will also be recycling on Jan. 8, as they take old Christmas trees and chip them into mulch for local homeowners to take free. That event will be from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., and those interested must bring bags or vehicles to transport the mulch.

It’s good to see local churches and cities taking the lead on recycling and repurposing, something we should all focus on. If something doesn’t have to go in the Shelby County landfill, why put it in there?

When you do your ritual spring cleaning, please consider taking your old, clean clothes and furniture to the Salvation Army or some other charitable organization.

If your city has a curbside recycling program, consider signing up. That way, recycling will be as easy as taking out the trash — but this time, it won’t all end up in the landfill.
