On the morning of Jan. 5, Alvis Armstrong, or as he was more affectionately known as “Daddy Bo,” left his earthly life and went home to heaven. When he got to the Pearly Gates (about sunrise our time) he was met by his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Also there to welcome him to his new celestial home was his wife, Olene Armstrong, and sister, Onzel Thornburg. While many of us mortals are left on earth shedding tears that he’s gone, we can all take comfort in knowing that there is a tremendous, joyous, ongoing reunion taking place on the other side of the river.

“Daddy Bo” retired in 1993 as an insurance agent and finally as a claims adjuster for American General Life Insurance Company. After retirement, he worked tirelessly as a deacon at South Shelby Baptist Church, and many people also will remember seeing him walking the roads in Shelby accompanied by a big red Doberman named Bama. By the way, Bama was there to greet “Daddy Bo” on his arrival, too (because “if there ain’t no dogs in heaven, then it’s really not heaven is it?”).

“Daddy Bo” is survived by Dixie, another very special and faithful four-legged companion; son, Louie Armstrong (Faye); daughter, Joyce Porter (Glen); son, Jeff Armstrong; granddaughter, Shannon Ashton; grandson, Ricky Porter (Angel); great-grandson, Brody Porter, numerous other step-grandchildren, step great-grandchildren, step great-great-grand children and nieces and nephews.

“Daddy Bo’s” funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Tom Minor and Pastor Howard Brasher with Bolton Funeral Home officiating. Pallbearers will be the deacons of South Shelby Baptist Church, Cory House, Chris House and Mark Seale. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. on Jan. 6 at Bolton Funeral Home, Columbiana. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 7 at the funeral home chapel with burial taking place immediately afterwards in Pinelawn Gardens adjacent to the funeral home.

“Daddy Bo’s” family would like to thank the entire community of Shelby and the staff and management of Columbiana Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center for their help and support throughout this difficult period of our lives.
