High school basketball roundup: Oak Mountain opens area slate with win against Pelham

The Oak Mountain High School boys’ basketball team defeated Pelham 62-32 in its Class 6A, Area 10 opener Jan. 11.

Colton McGriff led the Eagles (9-8 overall, 1-0 in Class 6A, Area 10) with 16 points. McGriff hit 7-of-19 field goals.

Garrett Cosgrove added 12 points and 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double. Bert Seitz contributed eight points and six rebounds.

Alec Rash led Pelham (8-9 overall, 0-1 in Class 6A, Area 10) with eight points and four rebounds. Tanner Rice contributed six points and five rebounds.

Oak Mountain jumped out to a quick start, leading visiting Pelham 14-4 after one quarter, and never looked back.

Oak Mountain, which led 25-13 heading into halftime, enjoyed a 20-8 rebound margin before intermission, including nine offensive boards.

Pelham connected on 39 percent (12-of-31) of its field goals while Oak Mountain hit 46 percent (24-of-52).

The Panthers were also hampered by 19 turnovers.  The Eagles committed 10 miscues.

Evangel Christian tops New Life to remain undefeated

The Evangel Christian School boys’ basketball team defeated New Life Christian 81-24 to remain unbeaten Jan. 11.

Marcus Johnson led the Lightning (10-0) with 24 points.

Jonathan Parker added 17 points. Aaron Walker chipped in 12 points in the victory.

Hope Christian falls to Evangel Family

The Hope Christian School boys’ basketball team fell to Evangel Family Christian Academy 58-45 on Jan. 11.

Seth Burnham led the Eagles (5-7) with 16 points.

Terrance Moore added nine points. Blake Thomas chipped in eight points. Caleb Douglas registered six points.

Pete Thomason, who scored four points, grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds. Burnham and Douglas grabbed six rebounds each.

Oak Mountain wins area opener against Pelham

The Oak Mountain High School girls’ basketball team defeated Pelham 42-26 in its Class 6A, Area 10 opener Jan. 11.

Hannah Griffin led the Eagles (14-4 overall, 1-0 in Class 6A, Area 10) with 15 points. Griffin also recorded five steals and dished out four assists.

Maegan McDanal added nine points and two steals. Madison Pierce contributed seven points.

Mackenzie Garmany chipped in six points and two steals.

Sydney Days led Pelham (6-8 overall, 0-1 in Class 6A, Area 10) with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Jamekia Dawson added six points. Erin Whitman chipped in four points.

Hope Christian falls to Evangel Family

The Hope Christian School girls’ basketball team fell to Evangel Family Christian Academy 42-24 on Jan. 11.

Davina Drew led the Eagles (6-5) with five points. Drew also dished out two assists.

Leigh Wilson-Legg, Erin Douglas and Christina Jones added four points each. Hannah Rettig, who scored three points, grabbed a team-high four rebounds.
