High school basketball roundup: Oak Mountain defeats Thompson in area contest

The Oak Mountain High School girls’ basketball team defeated Thompson 42-33 in a Class 6A, Area 10 contest Jan. 14.

Hannah Griffin led the Eagles (15-4 overall, 2-0 in Class 6A, Area 10) with 15 points. Griffin hit four 3-point shots in the victory.

Mackenzie Garmany, who finished 7-of-8 from the charity stripe, added 12 points. M.K. Shealy contributed six points and four rebounds.

Maegen McDanal chipped in five points and four rebounds. Madison Pierce, who has stepped up in the post with season-ending injuries to Lay Watts and Julia Ferguson, finished with four points.

Chelsea Taylor led the Warriors (8-9 overall, 0-2 in Class 6A, Area 10) with 12 points.

KaDeisha Stowes added 10 points and eight rebounds. Katie Guiser and Megan Hoyt chipped in three points each.

Pelham falls to Hoover in area contest

The Pelham High School girls’ basketball team fell to Hoover 67-33 in a Class 6A, Area 10 contest Jan. 14.

Carlie Walker led the Panthers (6-9 overall, 0-2 in Class 6A, Area 10) with 16 points.

Jamekia Dawson added 11 points.

Spain Park tops Homewood in area game

The Spain Park High School girls’ basketball team defeated Homewood 77-41 in a Class 6A, Area 12 contest Jan. 14.

Whitney Gulledge led the Jaguars (14-9 overall, 2-1 in Class 6A, Area 12) with 21 points.

Ashley Gaston added 13 points. Colby Ryan chipped in 12 points. Haven Eddy contributed seven points.

Jessica Freeman, Kelsie Williams and Jasmine Moore finished with six points each. Gulledge and Moore grabbed seven rebounds each.

Chelsea edges Shelby County in area contest

The Chelsea High School girls’ basketball team edged Shelby County 44-40 in overtime in a Class 5A, Area 7 contest Jan. 14.

Sydney Hobson led the Hornets (7-13 overall, 1-4 in Class 5A, Area 7) with 11 points.

Perri Lambert added 10 points.

Alysia Perkins led Shelby County (12-5 overall, 2-4 in Class 5A, Area 7) with a game-high 15 points.

Briarwood Christian defeats Vincent

The Briarwood Christian School girls’ basketball team defeated Vincent 64-29 on Jan. 14.

Hannah Wainwright led the Lions (18-3) with 15 points.

Anna Handlin added 12 points and 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double. Sarah Ann Johnston contributed 11 points. Abbie Cutcliffe finished with 10 points.

Brooklyn Jones led Vincent with a game-high 18 points.

Calera falls to Midfield in area contest

The Calera High School girls’ basketball team fell to Midfield 77-16 in a Class 4A, Area 8 contest Jan. 14.

Maurina McClain led the Eagles (1-10 overall, 0-3 in Class 4A, Area 8 ) with five points.

Kayla Brown added four points.

Montevallo falls to Hale County in area contest

The Montevallo High School girls’ basketball team fell to Hale County 49-37 in a Class 3A, Area 7 contest Jan. 14.

Amber Cardwell led the Bulldogs (6-7 overall, 0-3 in Class 3A, Area 7) with 24 points. Cardwell also grabbed a team-high 15 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

Indian Springs falls to Altamont

The Indian Springs School girls’ basketball team fell to Altamont 59-31 on Jan. 14.

Andrea Mayo led Indian Springs with a game-high 22 points.

Coosa Valley defeats Chambers Academy in area contest

The Coosa Valley Academy girls’ basketball team defeated Chambers Academy 50-30 in an AISA Class 1A, Region 2 — Area 1 contest Jan. 14.

Lauren Archer led the Rebels (11-2 overall, 2-0 in Class 1A, Region 2 — Area 1) with 17 points. Archer also grabbed 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

Amelia Ripley added 14 points in the victory. Jordan Smiley grabbed a team-high 18 rebounds.

Hope Christian defeats GACS

The Hope Christian School girls’ basketball team defeated Georgia/Alabama Christian School 43-25 on Jan. 14.

Erin Douglas led the Eagles (8-5) with 13 points. Douglas also grabbed seven rebounds.

Hannah Rettig added seven points and a team-high eight rebounds. Joelle Reed chipped in five points.

Christina Jones contributed four points in the victory.

BOYS

Pelham drops area contest against Hoover

The Pelham High School boys’ basketball team fell to Hoover 70-35 in a Class 6A, Area 10 contest Jan. 14.

Alec Rash led the Panthers (8-10 overall, 0-2 in Class 6A, Area 10) with nine points.

Tanner Rice and Tony Williams added eight points each. Graham Reilly handed out a game-high seven assists.

Spain Park drops area game against Homewood

The Spain Park High School boys’ basketball team dropped its first Class 6A, Area 12 contest Jan. 14 following a 55-47 loss to Homewood.

Mitchell Holt led the Jaguars (15-7 overall, 2-1 in Class 6A, Area 12) with 17 points.

Chelsea edges Shelby County in area game

The Chelsea High School boys’ basketball team edged Shelby County 68-65 in a Class 5A, Area 7 contest Jan. 14.

Jake Ganus led the Hornets (10-11 overall, 1-3 in Class 5A, Area 7) with a game-high 27 points.

D.D. Washington added 15 points. D.J. Washington chipped in 12 points.

Tyler Madison led Shelby County (7-10 overall, 2-3 in Class 5A, Area 7) with 26 points.

Ty Lollar chipped in 25 points in the loss.

Calera falls on the road at Midfield

The Calera High School boys’ basketball team fell to Midfield 67-63 in a Class 4A, Area 8 contest Jan. 14.

Deondre Haynes led the Eagles (13-5 overall, 2-1 in Class 4A, Area 8 ) with 21 points.

Jeremy Hyde added 15 points. Ronnie Clark chipped in 14 points in the loss.

Montevallo falls to Hale County in area contest

The Montevallo High School boys’ basketball team fell to Hale County 63-42 in a Class 3A, Area 7 contest Jan. 14.

Garrius Chappell led the Bulldogs (4-10 overall, 0-3 in Class 3A, Area 7) with a game-high 15 points.

Vincent defeats Briarwood Christian

The Vincent High School boys’ basketball team defeated Briarwood Christian 59-54 on Jan. 14.

Keyon Wallace led the Yellow Jackets (16-6) with 24 points. Wallace also grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds to go along with four blocked shots and three assists.

Bruce Hamilton added 13 points, 12 rebounds, three blocked shots and three assists. Dontravius Moon contributed eight points.

Coosa Valley tops Chambers Academy in area contest

The Coosa Valley Academy boys’ basketball team defeated Chambers Academy 55-32 in  an AISA Class 1A, Region 2 — Area 1 contest Jan. 14.

John Bullen led the Rebels (5-10 overall, 3-0 in AISA Class 1A, Region 2 — Area 1) with 19 points.

Steven Cryer added 11 points in the victory.

Cornerstone Christian defeats Lyman Ward

The Cornerstone Christian School boys’ basketball team defeated Lyman Ward 55-51 in an AISA Class 1A, Region 2 — Area 1 contest Jan. 14.

Kendall Moore led the Chargers (3-8 overall, 3-0 in AISA Class 1A, Region 2 — Area 1) with a game-high 39 points. Moore also grabbed 12 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

Hagan Joiner added 13 points and six rebounds.

Hope Christian defeats GACS

The Hope Christian School boys’ basketball team defeated Georgia/Alabama Christian School 74-34 on Jan. 14.

Terrance Moore led the Eagles (7-7) with 17 points.

Pete Thomason added 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Seth Burnham, who grabbed eight rebounds, and Brandon Fuller chipped in eight points each.

Cameron Costa finished with seven points. Caleb Douglas, Blake Thomas and Josh Wells contributed six points each. Douglas also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out a team-high five assists.

Benjamin Bunn, who scored four points, grabbed eight rebounds.
