Thompson wrestlers win Homewood Duals

The Thompson High School wrestling team won the Homewood Duals championship Jan. 22.

Thompson reeled off wins against Fort Payne, Tuscaloosa County and Scottsboro to clinch the Homewood Duals title.

Thompson wrestlers contributing to the Homewood Duals championship included Matthew Johnson, Conner Gilson, Clay Anthony, Cody McDanal, Hunter Gatlin, Matthew Gilson, Austin Gould, Brandon Belser, DeMario Haynes, Jackson Adelberg, Hayden Franklin, Brewer Gilliland, Nick Lowe, Wil Fondren, Cody Albarado, Colt Jones, John Austin Jones, Nick Hall, Jonathan Berry, Trey Berryhill, Shane Evans, Cahman Holder, Levi Springer, Jesse Masters, Stanton Costes, David Capers and Jack Scott.

Thompson edged Scottsboro 39-37 in the Homewood Duals championship match. Seven Warriors won their individual matches against Scottsboro.

Johnson pinned Arick Shankles of Scottsboro in the 103-pound match. Franklin pinned Scottsboro’s Cole Bartlett in the 130-pound match.

Berry pinned Justin Whitehead of Scottsboro in the 160-pound match. Holder pinned Joseph Manning of Scottsboro in the 171-pound match.

Costes pinned Jacob Wilson of Scottsboro in the 215-pound match. Scott earned a 9-4 decision over Matthew Franko of Scottsboro in the heavyweight match.

McDanal won the 119-pound match by forfeit.

The Warriors took down Fort Payne 45-24 in the tournament bracket portion of the Homewood Duals. Nine Thompson wrestlers won their individual matches against Fort Payne.

Conner Gilson earned a 6-3 decision over Jess Barker of Fort Payne in the 103-pound match. Gould pinned Ryan Wilks of Fort Payne in the 112-pound match.

Franklin earned a 20-4 technical fall decision over Mason Baldwin of Fort Payne in the 130-pound match. Albarado pinned Hunter Harrison of Fort Payne in the 140-pound match.

Hall pinned Fort Payne’s Rickey Robinson in the 152-pound match. Holder earned a 13-11 decision over David Langston of Fort Payne in the 171-pound match.

Masters pinned Daniel Felipe of Fort Payne in the 215-pound match. Capers earned a 7-0 decision over Brandon Heard of Fort Payne in the heavyweight match.

John Austin Jones won his match by forfeit.

Thompson defeated Tuscaloosa County 42-25 in the Homewood Duals tournament bracket. Seven Warriors won their individual matches against Tuscaloosa County.

Haynes pinned Elijah David of Tuscaloosa County in the 125-pound match. Franklin pinned Tuscaloosa County’s Cole Horton in the 130-pound match.

Albarado pinned Keeriq Prewitt of Tuscaloosa County in the 140-pound match. Colt Jones pinned Anthony Avery of Tuscaloosa County in the 145-pound match. Hall pinned Tuscaloosa County’s Christian Stewart in the 152-pound match. Masters pinned Justin Hill of Tuscaloosa County in the 189-pound match. Capers pinned Hunter Jenkins of Tuscaloosa County in the heavyweight match.

Thompson swept its way through pool matches with victories over Hoover, Gardendale and Calera.

Thirteen Warriors won their individual matches in a 75-6 win over Hoover.

Anthony pinned Caleb Tanner of Hoover in the 103-pound match. Belser pinned Jory Reynolds of Hoover in the 119-pound match.

Gilliland pinned Hoover’s Brandon Murphy in the 135-pound match. Lowe earned an 8-4 decision over Austin Vansword of Hoover in the 140-pound match.

Berryhill pinned Matthew Archurra of Hoover in the 152-pound match. Masters pinned Matt Wilcoxen of Hoover in the 215-pound match.

Gould, Haynes, Franklin, Fondren, Berry, Evans and Scott won each of their matches by forfeit.

The Warriors defeated Calera 76-3 in a pool match. Thirteen Warriors won their individual matches against Calera.

Johnson pinned Christian McDonald of Calera in the 103-pound match. Gatlin pinned Austin Dowdy of Calera in the 125-pound match.

Gilliland pinned Keenan Agee of Calera in the 130-pound match. Adelberg pinned Shawn O’Neill of Calera in the 140-pound match.

Hall earned a 12-2 major decision over Coby Mize of Calera in the 152-pound match. Holder pinned Calera’s Cody Thomaston in the 160-pound match.

Capers pinned Danny Diaz of Calera in the 215-pound match. Scott pinned Calera’s Kevin Murry in the heavyweight match.

Matthew Gilson, John Austin (J.A.) Jones, Evans and Springer each won their matches by forfeit.

Thompson defeated Gardendale 67-3 in a pool match. Thirteen Thompson wrestlers won their individual matches against Gardendale.

Belser pinned Chase Downer of Gardendale in the 119-pound match. Franklin earned a 11-4 decision over Brandon Roberts of Gardendale in the 130-pound match.

Gilliland earned a decision over Bradley Bowen of Gardendale in the 135-pound match. Albarado pinned Gardendale’s Jeremy Clemons in the 140-pound match.

John Austin Jones pinned Chase Downer of Gardendale in the 145-pound match. Hall earned an 8-3 decision over Andrew Todd of Gardendale in the 152-pound match.

Costes earned an 18-9 major decision over Gardendale’s Matthew Robles in the 215-pound match. Scott earned a 5-4 decision over Daniel Adkins of Gardendale in the heavyweight match.

Conner Gilson, Matthew Gilson, Haynes, Berry and Masters each won their matches by forfeit.
