Montevallo defeats Northside in area contest

The Montevallo High School girls’ basketball team overcame a red-hot start by area foe Northside to pick up a 52-46 win in a Class 3A, Area 7 contest Jan. 25.

Amber Cardwell led the Bulldogs (10-7 overall, 3-3 in Class 3A, Area 7) with 22 points. Cardwell also grabbed 12 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

Savannah Smith chipped in 10 points. Kiah Smith and Savannah Upton added eight points each. Mallory Anderson led Montevallo with 13 rebounds.

Northside hit four consecutive 3-pointers in the early going and raced out to a 17-6 lead. Montevallo stormed back, however, as Cardwell and Smith combined for all of the Bulldogs’ points in the first quarter to cut the deficit to 19-17 at the end of the opening period.

Montevallo outscored the Rams 12-2 in the second quarter to take a 29-21 advantage into halftime. Montevallo struggled on offense in the third quarter, allowing Northside to pull within two points going into the final period.

Montevallo got clutch outside shooting from Kiah Smith down the stretch, while Upton and Cardwell pounded the ball inside to put the game away in the final minutes.

BOYS

The Montevallo High School boys’ basketball team fell to Northside 43-30 in a Class 3A, Area 7 contest Jan. 25.

Rashard Jones led the Bulldogs (4-14 overall, 0-5 in Class 3A, Area 7) with 13 points.

Garrius Chappell added eight points in the defeat.
