Hurricanes pull away late to down Falcons

The University of Montevallo women’s basketball team battled Georgia Southwestern State University the entire game before a late push by the Hurricanes handed the Falcons a 48-44 loss Feb. 5.

Montevallo (8-12 overall, 4-7 in Peach Belt Conference) was led by senior Carrie Parrott, who had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Senior Tiaren Young added nine points and 10 rebounds.

Junior Tiffany McClure had seven points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The Falcons shot just 29.1 percent from the field and held the Hurricanes to 24.6 percent. The big difference came at the free-throw line, where the Hurricanes hit 81.3 percent of their attempts compared to the Falcons’ 53.8 percent shooting from the charity stripe.

Montevallo had the largest lead of the first half at the 16:52 mark, as a free throw by junior Taylor Welch gave the Falcons a 7-2 lead. After Parrott hit a layup with 30 seconds left in the opening half, the Hurricanes answered with a 3-pointer with nine seconds left to take a one-point halftime lead.

Montevallo opened the second half with an 8-0 run to take a 29-22 lead with 17:25 left in the game. The Hurricanes immediately answered with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 29-29.

With 2:46 left in the game, senior Jessica Collins hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 44-44. However, the Hurricanes held the Falcons scoreless in the final minutes and scored the game’s final four points.
