Byron Eugene “Sawmill” Alexander

Alexander, Byron Eugene “Sawmill”, age 80, of Calera went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011. He was born in Calera on July 27, 1930.

Sawmill was retired from ABC Rail. He was an avid fisherman, gardener, camper and a faithful member, founder, teacher and deacon of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church of Calera. Mr. Alexander also was a Chaplain for the SCV.

He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Eugene Alexander; mother, Johnnie Busby Alexander; and father, Howard Eugene Alexander.

His surviving relatives include his loving wife and best friend of 60 years, Delores Alexander; son, Dennis Alexander (Mickey); daughters, Kathy Wilson (Danny), Mary Alexander and Lynn Alexander; sister, Betty Killingsworth; brother, Bill Alexander (Norma); 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren with numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Alexander’s visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 11, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. for friends at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Calera. His funeral service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Calera. He will lie in state an hour prior to the service. His service will be officiated by Rev. Bill Alexander and Bro. Nick Wells. Rockco Funeral Home of Montevallo will be directing his services. Please visit us at Rockcofuneralhomes.com.
