The University of Montevallo baseball team picked up a 6-4 win on the road at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa in a mid-week game Feb. 9.

The victory was the Falcons’ fourth win in a row since an 0-2 start to the 2011 season.

Montevall (4-2) was led at the plate by freshmen Pablo Martell and Justin Burgess, who provided a pair of hits each. Martell had a double and an RBI, while Burgess had a pair of RBIs.

Sophomore Austin Dubberly, a Pelham graduate, and junior Heath Peterson provided the only other extra base hits. Dubberly had a double, while Peterson had a solo homerun. Dubberly and Peterson also provided the only other RBIs as they had one each.

Sophomore Michael Shreves improved his record to 1-1 as he went six innings on the mound with three strikeouts and a walk while allowing just two runs. Freshman Alex Guilford took over for Shreves in the seventh inning and pitched one inning with two strikeouts and a pair of walks. Senior Joey Noro pitched the final two innings with one strikeout and one walk.

The Tigers struck first in the first inning with a double. Stillman then sacrificed over the runner and a used single through the right side to bring home the first run of the game.

Montevallo answered in the second inning, as junior Jeremy Boyte hit a single to center field and then stole second. Boyte was driven home by a double from Dubberly to tie the game at 1-1. A single by Martell later in the inning scored Dubberly and then another single by Burgess brought home junior catcher Blaine Rosenberg, an Oak Mountain graduate, who had reached base on a hit by pitch.

Up 3-1, the Falcons allowed another run in the third inning before answering right away in the fourth inning as junior Josh Headley used a single and a stolen base to get himself into position to score. Burgess provided the single to bring Headley home later in the inning.

Both teams were scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings, but Montevallo scored another run in the seventh inning as a Martell double, a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch provided enough offense to score a run. Montevallo scored its final run in the eighth inning as Peterson hit a lead-off homerun.

The Tigers tried to claw their way back into the game in the bottom of the eighth inning, as they scored a pair of runs before Noro was able to stop the bleeding on a strikeout and grounder to end the inning.

Three groundouts to first base in the ninth inning ended the threat by the Tigers.
