Montevallo men’s golf places ninth in first spring tournament

The University of Montevallo men’s golf team opened the spring portion of its 2010-2011 schedule with a ninth place showing at the Outback Steakhouse Intercollegiate tournament Feb. 8, hosted by Catawba College at the Hombre Golf Club in Panama City Beach, Fla.

The first day of action was rained out so the tournament consisted of just one round.

The Falcons carded a team total of 35-over par 323, which placed them 16 strokes behind tournament winner Flagler College.

Junior Gonzalo Gambertoglio led Montevallo with a 4-over par 76, which placed him in a five-way tie for eighth place in individual standings. Gambertoglio finished three strokes back of individual champion Christian Humber of Central Alabama Community College.

Sophomore Mario Lepori finished in a four-way tie for 33rd overall in individual standings with an 8-over par 80. Freshman Sindre Rambjor finished in a four-way tie for 43rd overall in individual standings with his 11-over par 83.

Teammates Joe Haupt, a freshman, and Ruwaldt Viljoen, a senior, finished in a 10-way tie for 47th overall in individual standings after each carded a 12-over par 84.

The field consisted of 15 teams. The Falcons finished ahead of host Catawba College as well as Peach Belt Conference rival North Georgia College and State University.
