Oak Mountain edges Thompson in area tournament semifinals

The Oak Mountain High School girls’ basketball team traded blows with Thompson in the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A, Area 10 tournament semifinals Feb. 10 at Hoover High School.

The two teams didn’t trade blows on defense, but with poor shooting on offense as the Eagles outlasted the Warriors 27-23 to advance to the Class 6A, Area 10 championship game Feb. 12 at 1 p.m.

Oak Mountain will face host Hoover in the title game.

Oak Mountain (18-9) jumped out to an early lead with Mackenzie Garmany leading the way with eight first-half points. However, Thompson’s Katie Guiser hit two first-half 3-pointers to vault Thompson into a 15-15 deadlock with the Eagles.

In the second half, Madison Pierce broke a tie with less than three minutes to go with an inside bucket to give Oak Mountain a 23-21 lead. Garmany hit two free throws and Hannah Griffin added two shots from the charity stripe to ice the win for the Eagles.

Griffin finished with eight points on two 3-pointers and three steals.

Pierce finished with four points, five rebounds and three steals.

KaDiesha Stowes led Thompson (10-14) with 10 points and five rebounds.

Asia Anchrum added four points in the defeat.
