Calera High School freshman Coby Mize became the first ever wrestler from his school to advance to the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 4A-1A state tournament following a section meet Feb. 12 at Walter Wellborn High School in Anniston.

Mize, who will enter the state tournament with a 28-4 record in individual matches, won the 152-pound individual championship at the section meet. Mize will wrestle in the Class 4A-1A state tournament Feb. 18-19 at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.

Mize received a bye in the opening round of the 152-pound championship bracket at the section meet. Mize pinned Timothy McComber of Catholic-Montgomery in 1:37 in the quarterfinals.

Mize advanced to the 152-pound championship final following a 16-0 technical fall decision over Jordan Tyree of Piedmont in the semifinals. Mize earned a 4-2 decision over Donovan Santana of Cleburne County in the 152-pound championship match.

The Eagles finished 12th in team standings at the section meet with 47.5 points. Complete individual results are below.
