Six Spain Park wrestlers headed to state tournament

Six Spain Park High School wrestlers advanced to the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A state tournament following a section meet Feb. 12 at Tuscaloosa County High School in Northport.

Junior Tommy Bostany, junior Connor Whatley, sophomore Conrad Hathcoat, sophomore Blake Daniel, junior Mo Mills and senior Kameron Ricks will each wrestle in the Class 6A state tournament Feb. 17-19 at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.

Bostany, who will enter the state tournament with a 20-3 record in individual matches, finished runner-up in the 119-pound weight division.

Bostany pinned Nick English of Pelham in 27 seconds in the championship quarterfinals and pinned Ty Graham of Hoover in 4:12 in the semifinals. Bostany dropped a 4-2 decision to Reed Jacks of Thompson in the 119-pound championship match.

Whatley, who will enter the state tournament with a 14-12 record in individual matches, placed third in the 130-pound weight division.

Whatley pinned Toderick Jowers of Hoover in 5:01 in the championship quarterfinals before dropping a 4-1 decision to Brewer Gilliland of Thompson in the semifinals. Whatley pinned Dylan Kabase of Vestavia Hills in 4:20 in the consolation semifinals and earned a 5-2 decision over Jowers in the third-place match.

Hathcoat, who will enter the state tournament with a 34-22 record in individual matches, placed third in the 135-pound weight division.

Hathcoat pinned Adam Brookins of Vestavia Hills in 3:40 in the championship quarterfinals before dropping a 12-0 major decision to Haden Hallman of Tuscaloosa County in the semifinals. Hathcoat received a bye in the consolation semifinals and pinned Nick Lowe of Thompson in 2:43 in the third-place match.

Daniel, who will enter the state tournament with a 31-16 record in individual matches, placed third in the 160-pound weight division.

Daniel pinned Jonathan Hagler of Minor in 5:25 in the championship quarterfinals before being pinned by Harrison Hill of Vestavia Hills in 1:43 in the semifinals. Daniel earned an 8-1 decision over Nolan Vinson of Pelham in the consolation semifinals and pinned Matt Wilcoxen of Hoover in 2:45 in the third-place match.

Mills, who will enter the state tournament with a 45-21 record in individual matches, placed fourth in the 189-pound weight division.

After receiving a bye in the opening round at the section meet, Mills pinned Dustin Dockery of Tuscaloosa County in 3:59 in the championship quarterfinals. Mills dropped a 4-3 decision to Jesse Masters of Thompson in the semifinals.

Mills pinned Brooks Haley of Pelham in 3:51 in the consolation semifinals before being pinned by Dalton Campbell of Vestavia Hills in the third-place match.

Ricks, who will enter the state tournament with a 47-7 record in individual matches, finished runner-up in the 215-pound weight division.

Ricks pinned Clyde Baskin of Minor in 50 seconds in the championship quarterfinals and earned an 8-5 decision over Jimmy Miller of Thompson in the semifinals. Ricks was pinned by Brett Brown of Tuscaloosa County in 2:34 in the 215-pound championship match.
