The Thompson High School wrestling team finished runner-up in an Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A section meet Feb. 12 at Tuscaloosa County High School in Northport.

The Warriors racked up 190.5 team points at the section meet, which placed Thompson nine points behind section winner Hoover.

One season after setting a school record with 11 state qualifiers, the Warriors set a new mark with 13 out of 14 wrestlers heading to the Class 6A state tournament Feb. 17-19 at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.

Junior Matthew Gilson, sophomore Austin Gould, sophomore Reed Jacks, sophomore DeMario Haynes, freshman Brewer Gilliland, sophomore Nick Lowe, junior Cody Albarado, junior John Austin (J.A.) Jones, sophomore Nick Hall, junior Josh Gillaspie, sophomore Cahman Holder, junior Jesse Masters and senior Jimmy Miller will each wrestle in the Class 6A state tournament.

Jacks, Gilliland, Jones and Hall will each enter the Class 6A state tournament as section champions.

Jacks, who will enter the state tournament with a 47-5 record in individual matches, won the 119-pound individual championship at the section meet.

Jacks pinned Ty Brock of Northridge in 52 seconds in the championship quarterfinals and earned a 10-5 decision over Will Knox of Vestavia Hills in the semifinals. Jacks earned a 4-2 decision over Tommy Bostany of Spain Park in the 119-pound championship match.

Gilliland, who will enter the state tournament with a 48-14 record in individual matches, won the 130-pound individual championship at the section meet.

Gilliland pinned Khalil Jefferson of Minor in 3:59 in the championship quarterfinals and earned a 4-1 decision over Connor Whatley of Spain Park in the semifinals. Gilliland pinned Cole Horton of Tuscaloosa County in 2:33 in the 130-pound championship match.

Jones, who will enter the state tournament with a 63-5 record in individual matches, won the 145-pound individual championship at the section meet.

Jones received a bye in the championship quarterfinals and pinned Jimmy Whitt of Vestavia Hills in 3:15 in the semifinals. Jones won by forfeit over Parker Grissom of Hoover in the 145-pound championship match.

Hall, who will enter the state tournament with a 57-3 record in individual matches, won the 152-pound individual championship at the section meet.

Hall, who won the Class 6A 140-pound championship last season, received a bye in the championship quarterfinals and earned a 7-3 decision over Jack Nelson of Vestavia Hills in the semifinals. Hall earned a 7-3 decision over Rush Hall of Hoover in the 152-pound championship match.

Two Thompson wrestlers finished runner-up in their respective weight divisions.

Gillaspie, who will enter the state tournament with a 37-9 record in individual matches, finished runner-up in the 160-pound weight division at the section meet.

Gillaspie, who won the Class 6A 152-pound championship last season, won by forfeit over Ryan Reedy-Buffer of Northridge in the championship quarterfinals and pinned Matt Wilcoxen of Hoover in 47 seconds in the semifinals. Gillaspie forfeited the 152-pound championship match with Harrison Hill of Vestavia Hills.

Masters, who will enter the state tournament with a 49-16 record in individual matches, finished runner-up in the 189-pound weight division at the section meet.

After receiving a bye in the opening round at the section meet, Masters pinned John Ross Morton of Northridge in the championship quarterfinals. Masters earned a 4-3 decision over Mo Mills of Spain Park in the semifinals before dropping a 15-5 major decision to Teryence Glaze of Hoover in the 189-pound championship match.
