Jaguars hold off Falcons

The University of Montevallo women’s basketball team dropped a back-and-forth contest with Augusta State University 61-58 in a Peach Belt Conference contest Feb. 12.

The Falcons (8-14 overall, 4-9 in Peach Belt Conference) were led by senior Carrie Parrott, who had a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Parrott also chipped in three assists.

Senior Jessica Collins scored 11 points while hitting 5-of-7 attempts from the floor.

Junior Tiffany McClure scored nine points while grabbing five boards and dishing out three assists.

The Falcons shot 41.5 percent from the field while Augusta State hit 40 percent of its shots. Montevallo’s biggest struggle came at the free-throw line, where the Falcons hit just 52.6 percent of their attempts.

Montevallo led 58-55 after a jumper by Collins with 2:40 left in the game. Augusta State’s Waneta Carlisle answered with a layup on the Jaguars’ next possession to pull within 58-57. Carlisle then got a steal and after four Augusta State missed shots and offensive rebounds, she drained a jumper to give the Jaguars’ a 59-58 lead with 1:26 left.

Both teams exchanged missed 3-pointers and following a Montevallo timeout, Augusta State stole the ball was fouled with just 10 seconds left on the clock. The Jaguars made both free-throw attempts to clinch the victory.
