Volleyball standouts in all-star game

Two high school volleyball standouts from Shelby County will participate in the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s North-South all-star game during All-Star Sports Week in Montgomery in July.

Oak Mountain High School outside hitter Sara Goodwin and Pelham High School middle blocker/outside hitter Porsha Tolbert, who will be entering their senior seasons in the fall of 2011, will participate on the South all-star team against the North.

The all-star game will take place July 14 at 4 p.m. on the Faulkner University campus in Montgomery.

Goodwin finished her junior season as the Eagles’ second-leading attacker with 355 kills. Goodwin, who finished with 42 service aces and 41 blocks, led Oak Mountain defensively with 500 digs.

Tolbert finished her junior season as the Panthers’ team leader with 425 kills. Tolbert, who finished with 59 service aces and 30 blocks, also led Pelham defensively with 405 digs.

The South team will be coached by Bill Oldfield of Providence Christian School and Metta Roberts of Robertsdale High School.
