The Thompson High School wrestling team, in search of its first ever Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A wrestling title, leads the field of teams in the state wrestling tournament following the first day of action Feb. 17 at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.

The Warriors racked up 69 team points on the first day and lead second-place Grissom by six points.

Oak Mountain racked up 25 points and sits in 16th place in team standings after the first day of wrestling. Spain Park is in 17th place in team standings with 23 points. Pelham, which racked up seven points on the first day of action, is in 24th place in team standings.

Thompson jumped out to an early lead by having six of its wrestlers advance to the championship semifinal round. Reed Jacks, DeMario Haynes, Cody Albarado, John Austin (J.A.) Jones, Nick Hall and Jesse Masters will each wrestle in the championship semifinals Feb. 18.

Jacks pinned Clay Downer of Gardendale in 2:18 in the first round in the 119-pound weight division. Jacks earned a 11-8 decision over Austin Holt of Grissom in the championship quarterfinals.

Haynes earned a 9-7 decision over Caleb Ellerbee of Lee-Montgomery in the first round in the 125-pound weight division. Haynes earned a 3-1 decision over Jared Godfrey of Oak Mountain in the championship quarterfinals.

Albarado earned a 10-5 decision over D.J. Richardson of Opelika in the first round in the 140-pound weight division. Albarado earned a 9-1 major decision over Jake Gord of Buckhorn in the championship quarterfinals.

Jones pinned Micah McGlathery of Sparkman in 28 seconds in the first round in the 145-pound weight division. Jones pinned John David Grissom of Clay-Chalkville in 1:23 in the championship quarterfinals.

Hall pinned Mitchell McFarling of Clay-Chalkville in 2:23 in the first round in the 152-pound weight division. Hall earned a 15-4 major decision over Rich McClellan of Benjamin Russell in the championship quarterfinals.

Masters pinned Fred Dunn of Clay-Chalkville in 3:33 the first round in the 189-pound weight division. Masters pinned Antone Robinson of Wetumpka in 3:14 in the championship quarterfinals.

Oak Mountain has one wrestler who will compete in the championship semifinals Feb. 18.

The Eagles’ Jared Woodall pinned Mo Mills of Spain Park in 1:48 in the first round in the 189-pound weight division. Woodall pinned Xavier Drake of Opelika in 1:22 in the championship quarterfinals.

Spain Park has two wrestlers still alive in the championship bracket.

The Jaguars’ Tommy Bostany pinned Logan Dollins of Oak Mountain in 3:23 in the first round in the 119-pound weight division. Bostany earned a 10-7 decision over Jesse Webster of Bob Jones in the championship quarterfinals.

Kameron Ricks of Spain Park earned a 14-8 decision over Quin Allen of Benjamin Russell in the first round in the 215-pound weight division. Ricks pinned T.J. Demos of Huntsville in 3:54 in the championship quarterfinals.

Pelham had one wrestler who reached the championship quarterfinals before dropping into the consolation bracket.

The Panthers’ Cody Wehunt earned a 7-6 decision over Cody Lane of Auburn in the first round in the 140-pound weight division. Wehunt dropped an 8-3 decision to Zach Smith of Pell City in the championship quarterfinals.

The AHSAA Class 6A championship semifinals will take place Feb. 18 and the state championship matches are scheduled for Feb. 19. The AHSAA Class 4A-1A state tournament, which features Coby Mize of Calera, begins Feb. 18 with the championship quarterfinals. The AHSAA Class 4A-1A championship matches are scheduled for Feb. 19.
