Pelham sweeps opening day doubleheader

The Pelham High School baseball team swept Russell County and Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa in an opening day doubleheader Feb. 21.

The Panthers defeated Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 11-1.

Ty Pierce led Pelham (2-0) at the plate with three hits, including a lead-off homerun. Pierce finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs, three runs scored and two stolen bases.

Hunter Soleymani also homered in the victory. Soleymani finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Fletcher Johnson had a two-run triple and finished with two RBIs.

Trevor Fitts picked up the win on the mound after striking out 12 batters and giving up only one earned run on one hit in six innings. Fitts issued one walk.

Parker Curry closed out the game two strikeouts in the seventh inning.

Pelham defeated Russell County 8-2.

Alec Rash started on the mound and retired seven straight batters at one point during his first game with the Panthers. Rash gave up two runs, including one earned run, on two hits with four walks and a strikeout in three innings.

Soleymani earned the win after entering in relief of Rash in the fourth inning. Soleymani pitched four scoreless innings with six strikeouts and a walk. He allowed only one hit.

Reed Bright led the Panthers at the plate as he finished 3-of-3 with a double, two RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Michael Herring finished 3-for-4 with an RBI.
