The University of Montevallo men’s golf team finished in eighth place in team standings Feb. 21-22 in Armstrong Atlantic State University’s Pirate Invitational at Savannah Quarters Country Club in Savannah, Ga.

The tournament was played at the site of the upcoming 2011 Peach Belt Conference tournament. Eight Peach Belt Conference teams, including the Falcons, competed in the tournament with Montevallo finishing ahead of two conference opponents.

The Falcons finished in eighth place just ahead of 10th-place North Georgia College and State and 11th-place Clayton State University. Montevallo was just three strokes behind Lander University, which finished in seventh in team standings. Flagler College won the tournament.

Montevallo was led by senior Ruwaldt Viljoen, who finished with a three-round score of 24-over par 234. Viljoen finished tied for 36th overall in individual standings.

Freshman Sindre Rambjor also shot a 24-over par 234, but unfortunately for the Falcons he was playing as an individual and his score did not count toward the overall team score. If Rambjor’s score had counted, the Falcons would have finished ahead of Lander.

Junior Gonzalo Gambertoglio finished with a score of 235 strokes, just one shot back from the Falcons’ leaders. Gambertoglio finished 38th overall in individual standings.

Sophomore Austin Murphey finished just one stroke back from Gambertoglio with a score of 236 strokes, which placed him 43rd overall in individual standings.

The final two Montevallo golfers, sophomore Mariano Lepori and freshman Joe Haupt, finished tied for 51st overall in individual standings with a score of 239 strokes.
