Spain Park golfer wins West Alabama Classic

Defending Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A boys’ golf individual champion Michael Johnson opened his senior season at Spain Park by setting a tournament record Feb. 23 with a two-day total of 12-under par 132 to capture the West Alabama Classic individual title at Ol’ Colony Golf Course in Tuscaloosa.

Johnson, who signed a men’s golf scholarship with Auburn  University earlier this month, fired an 8-under par 64 in the first round Feb. 22. Johnson carded a four-under par 68 in the final round Feb. 23.

Spain Park, which won its third consecutive AHSAA Class 6A championship last season, finished in a two-way tie for third place in team standings with Vestavia Hills after firing a score of 633 in the first tournament of the 2011 season. Mountain Brook emerged as the champion in the 17-team field after carding a team total of 573 strokes.

Zach Verner of Spain Park carded a 17-over par 161. The Jaguars’ Riley Smith fired a 23-over par 167. Patrick Bailey rounded out the group of Spain Park golfers with his 32-over par 176.

Pelham finished 11th in team standings at the West Alabama Classic after carding a team total of 700 strokes in the tournament.

Conner Slane led the Panthers as he fired a two-day total of 13-over par 157.

Slane carded a 4-over par 76 in the first round Feb. 22. He finished the tournament with a 9-over par 81 in the final round Feb. 23.

Justin Nolen of Pelham fired a 17-over par 161 in the tournament. The Panthers’ Braxton Holley finished with a score of 183 strokes.

John Menke of Pelham finished with a score of 204 strokes.
