FROM STAFF REPORTS

Former Spain Park High School basketball standout Josh Magette was recently named to the All-Gulf South Conference first team following his junior season at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Magette, who earned the honor two days after helping the Chargers capture the Gulf South Conference East Division championship with a career-high 30 points in UAH’s 83-76 win over North Alabama, has started all 28 games this season at point guard and leads his team with an average of 12.9 points per game.

Magette, who has 527 career assists, needs only nine more assists to pass former UAH standout James Mundie and become the Chargers’ all-time leader in assists.

Magette, who is shooting 52 percent from the floor, 36 percent from beyond the arc and 79 percent from the charity stripe, is currently second among NCAA Division II players in assists. Magette leads the Chargers with 217 assists, and is averaging 7.8 assists per game. Magette is second on the team with an average of 4.4 rebounds per game.

Magette was named to the All-Gulf South Conference second team following his sophomore season in 2009-2010.

Magette was named the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Year following the 2008-2009 season after averaging 11 points per game and leading his squad in steals.

Magette led Spain Park to the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A Final Four during his junior season in 2006-2007.

Magette and the Chargers (25-3) will travel to Southaven, Miss. this weekend for the Gulf South Conference tournament and are a lock for a return trip to the NCAA Division II men’s basketball tournament.
