Pelham pounds Bessemer City in soccer match

The Pelham High School girls’ soccer team defeated Bessemer City 10-0 in high school soccer action March 1.

Jessica Bird led the Panthers (5-1) with six goals in the victory. Bird also recorded two assists in the win.

Ashley Gardner, Natalia Alcaino, Cassie Shiflett and Roxana Martinez scored one goal each for the Panthers.

Pelham goalkeeper Selina Delgadillo finished with five saves in the shut out.

BOYS

The Pelham High School boys’ soccer team defeated Bessemer City 5-0 in a high school soccer match March 1.

Oscar Pineda scored the first goal from inside the box on a pass from Diego Lopez 21 minutes into the opening half to give the Panthers (3-5-1) a 1-0 lead.

At the 35 minute mark, Miguel Quijada received a through ball from Oscar Pineda on a counter attack goal and scored a goal to push the Panthers’ lead to 2-0.

Diego Lopez scored on a pass from Phillip Dublin 10 minutes into the second half to give Pelham a 3-0 lead. Cesar Canales sent a shot into the box, which was deflected by a Bessemer City players’ hand, at the 31 minute mark in the second half to earn a penalty-kick attempt. Cesar converted the penalty-kick attempt to push the Panthers’ lead to 4-0.

With two minutes remaining in the match, Karsten Hicks scored the fifth and final goal of the game with an assist by Ethan Savage.

Pelham goalkeeper Hunter Payant recorded one save in his second shut out of the season.
