Oak Mountain High School junior Jakaryus Redwine won his second consecutive 400-meter dash event to open the 2011 outdoor track and field season March 5 at the King of the Mountain meet at Vestavia Hills High School.

Redwine clocked a time of 49.89 seconds for the second week in a row to capture the boys’ 400-meter dash title. Redwine set the personal record for the first time after capturing the boys’ 400-meter dash championship Feb. 26 at the Hoover Open.

Redwine also helped the Eagles’ 400-meter relay team capture the boys’ championship at the King of the Mountain meet with a collective time of 43. 59 seconds.

Redwine was one of four Shelby County athletes who captured an individual championship at the King of the Mountain meet.

Spain Park junior Joseph Williams won his second discus throw title this season after a throw of 162 feet, 9 inches in the second meet of the season. Williams’ attempt measured nearly four feet better than his championship toss of 158 feet, 10 1/2 inches at the Hoover Open last weekend.

Simone Charley of Spain Park captured the girls’ long jump championship with her leap of 17 1/2 inches in the King of the Mountain meet. Charley’s attempt measure more than an inch further than the second-place finisher.

Vicki Gater of Pelham won the girls’ shot put title with her toss of 35 feet, 7 1/2 inches, which put her attempt more than eight inches ahead of the second-place finisher.

The Thompson High School boys’ track and field team led all Shelby County teams at the King of the Mountain meet. The Warriors finished fifth in the boys’ team standings with 25 points.

The Warriors’ Jaalen Jones posted the best finish for Thompson in an individual event. Jones finished third in the 100-meter dash with his time of 11.50 seconds.

Thompson’s 400-meter relay team came in fourth in the event.

The King of the Mountain meet was called after eight of 18 events due to inclement weather. The team scores below were based on the eight completed events.

Spain Park and Oak Mountain finished in a two-way tie for seventh overall in team standings with 20 points each. Briarwood Christian came in 20th overall in team standings with one point.

Spain Park led Shelby County teams in the girls’ team standings. The Jaguars finished seventh overall with 21 points.

Thompson came in 10th overall in team standings with 16 points. Pelham finished 11th overall in team standings with 15 points. Oak Mountain finished 19th overall in team standings with five points.
