Spain Park downs Thompson in tourney

Spain Park High School senior Chris Ellis is known for his exploits on the mound.

Ellis displayed his power at the plate to help the Jaguars bounce back from their first loss in the Birmingham Metro tournament with an 11-1 win over Thompson in a five-inning game in tournament action March 4.

The Ole Miss signee led Spain Park (7-3) at the plate as he finished 3-for-3 with a double. Ellis drove in two runs and scored three runs for the Jaguars.

Mikey White went 2-for-3 with a double and drove in a run. Alex Close finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and scored two runs.

Paul Angel went 1-for-4 with a solo home run. Carter White finished 1-for-3 with a double and scored a run. Marks Abernathy finished 1-for-3 and drove in a run.

Pinch runner Sean Taylor scored three runs. Pinch runner Dustin Cowart scored one run.

Mikey White (1-0) picked up the win on the mound after allowing one earned run on three hits with a walk in three innings.

Close struck out two and walked one batter in one inning in relief. Austin Veteto struck out two batters and allowed one hit in one inning in relief.

Matt Haskins led Thompson (5-5) at the plate as he finished 1-for-2 and scored a run.

Gus Williford went 1-for-3 and drove in a run. Taylor Bria finished 1-for-3. Skylar Estell went 1-for-1.

Jon Keller (1-1) took the loss on the mound after giving up seven runs, including five earned runs, on eight hits with four strikeouts and two walks in three innings.

Estell gave up four earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks in two innings in relief.
