Falcons drop two against Georgia Southwestern

The University of Montevallo baseball team (9-9, 0-3 PBC) fell in a doubleheader to Georgia Southwestern State University 7-1 and 5-2 in Peach Belt Conference action March 7.

Montevallo (9-9 overall, 0-3 in Peach Belt Conference) had four players all register three hits in the doubleheader.

Freshman Alex Stiver went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in game two after not playing in the first game. Freshman Will Fulmer was 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, a run scored and three walks in the doubleheader.

Junior Chris Ross, a Pelham graduate, was 3-for-8 with a double, a walk and a stolen base. Junior Jeremy Boyte went 3-for-9 with an RBI and a run scored. Junior Josh Headley was 2-for-8 with an RBI and a run scored. Senior Scott Deason, a Spain Park graduate, picked up the only other RBI as he went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Senior Kyle Butler took the mound for the first game as he went 6 2/3 innings while striking out two and walking three. Butler took home the loss as his record fell to 2-1 on the season. Freshman Alex Guilford started game two for the Falcons and went 4 1/3 innings while striking out two and walking one. Guilford took the loss and his record fell to 2-2 on the season.

Game one started out as a pitchers’ duel as neither team scored in the first five innings and both teams combined for four hits. The Hurricanes struck first scoring in the top of the sixth and they then added five runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-0 lead.

Montevallo scored their lone run of the game in seventh as Fulmer led off with a double down the right-field line. After a walk and a strikeout, an error by the catcher allowed Fulmer to move to third. Fulmer was eventually driven home by a groundout from Headley that cut the lead to 6-1.

Georgia Southwestern tacked on one more run in the ninth to make the final score 7-1.

In game two, the Falcons struck first as they scored two runs in the first inning.

After a lead-off fly out Headley walked and was moved to second by a groundout. With two outs and a runner on second Boyte hit an RBI single up the middle to score Headley. Senior Josh Dabbs then hit a single to right center to move Boyte to second. Deason doubled to left field to score Boyte which put the Falcons up 2-0.

The Hurricanes scored a run in the third to cut the Falcons lead to one and then they exploded with four runs in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead. Montevallo was unable to score in the final four innings as the Hurricanes won, 5-2.
