Montevallo baseball drops conference opener

The University of Montevallo baseball team dropped its 2011 Peach Belt Conference opener March 6 to Georgia Southwestern State University 6-2.

The Falcons (9-7 overall, 0-1 in Peach Belt Conference) mustered just five hits in the game, while the Hurricanes belted out 13 hits in the win.

Montevallo was led by junior Josh Headley, who was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored. Sophomore Austin Dubberly, a Pelham graduate, was 1-for-2 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.

Junior Chris Ross, a Pelham graduate, provided the only other RBI as he was 1-for-4 at the plate.

Sophomore Will Dismukes took home the loss on the mound as his record fell to 2-3 on the season. Dismukes pitched 5 2/3 innings with five strikeouts and five walks.

Senior Joey Noro pitched the final 3 1/3 innings while striking out three and walking one.

The Hurricanes struck first in the first inning as they scored two runs off three hits.

Montevallo answered in the bottom half of the inning with a run of its own. Headley led off the inning with a double to center field and moved to third base on a groundout by senior Scottie Deason, a Spain Park graduate. Dubberly provided the sacrifice fly to center field to give the Falcons their first run of the game.

Montevallo went scoreless for the next seven innings, as Georgia Southwestern tacked on a run in the fourth inning and three more in the ninth inning to take a 6-1 lead.

In the ninth inning, Dubberly opened with a double down the left-field line. Junior Heath Peterson and senior Josh Dabbs walked to load the bases with no outs. After a strikeout, Dubberly scored on a fielder’s choice by Boyte before the game ended with a strikeout.

The Falcons will return to action Monday, March 7 at 11 a.m. as they close out their series with the Hurricanes at Kermit A. Johnson Field.
