The Montevallo High School softball team defeated Greensboro 18-6 in high school softball action March 7.

After falling behind 3-1 in the first inning, the Bulldogs rebounded with four runs in the second to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Montevallo got consecutive singles from Destiny Upton, Savannah Upton and Savannah Smith to plate the four runs.

Greensboro cut the lead to 6-5 in the fifth, but Montevallo exploded for seven runs in the top of the sixth inning. The big blows in the sixth came on doubles by Savannah Upton, Mallory Anderson and Madison Fancher.

Montevallo (2-2) added five more runs in the seventh to put the game away, with Anderson and Kaley Kornegay sparking the rally with RBI doubles.

“Greensboro is a much-improved team, and we may have taken them a little lightly,” said Montevallo coach Ronnie Holsombeck. “We helped them with some early fielding and baserunning errors, but once we regained our composure, we were able to put them away.”

Kornegay went the distance on the mound, giving up just one earned run while striking out five and walking four to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Savanna Upton led the Bulldogs with four hits, while Destiny Upton and Anderson added three hits apiece.  Fancher and Kornegay each finished with four RBIs.
