Spain Park heads to Metro tournament semifinals

The Spain Park High School baseball team handed Pelham its first loss of the season and advanced to the Birmingham Metro tournament semifinals following a 6-2 win over the Panthers in tournament action March 7.

The Jaguars, who scored four runs in the eight inning to clinch the victory, face Thompson in the winners’ bracket March 8.

Paul Angel led Spain Park (9-3) at the plate as he finished 3-for-5 and scored a run.

Alex Close finished 2-for-3 and drove in a run. Carter White went 1-for-3 and scored a run. Carter White finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Chris Ellis finished 1-for-2 and drove in a run. Sean Taylor scored a run.

Ellis picked up the win on the mound after giving up two earned runs on six hits with 12 strikeouts and a walk in 6 1/3 innings.

Parker Curry led Pelham (10-1) led the Panthers at the plate as he finished 2-for-4 and scored a run.

Ty Pierce went 1-for-4 and drove in a run. Reed Bright went 1-for-3. Tanner Jackson finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Jacob Williams went 1-for-3.

Hunter Soleymani took the loss on the mound after giving up six earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and four walks in 7 2/3 innings.

Spain Park defeated Clay-Chalkville 7-6 in its opening game March 7.

The Jaguars scored one run in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure the victory.

Angel led Spain Park at the plate as he finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Carter White went 1-for-2 and scored two runs. Mikey Whit went 1-for-4 and drove in a run. Alex Close finished 1-for-4 and drove in a run. Ellis finished 1-for-4 and drove in a run.

Austin Veteto went 2-for-3 and drove in a run. Nathan Brock finished 1-for-4 and scored a run. Colton Freeman and Sean Taylor scored a run each.

Alex Close started on the mound and gave up four earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 7 2/3 innings. Marks Abernathy recorded the win after striking out one batter in 1/3 of an inning.
