Chelsea tops Elmore County in tournament opener

The Chelsea High School baseball team defeated Elmore County 10-5 in its tournament opener March 14 at the Lake Martin Classic in Alex City.

Chelsea scored two runs in the top of the second inning, including a solo homer by Joey Mock.

The Hornets added five runs in the top of the fourth inning, including a three-run blast by Hunter Picklesimer.

Elmore County scored its first two runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning before Chelsea sealed the victory with four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Justen Moore and Brady Holder each had run-scoring singles before being driven in following a two-run double off the right-center field wall by Jake Campbell.

Elmore County scored the final three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but couldn’t overcome the deficit.

Campbell led Chelsea at the plate as he finished 3-for-4 with two doubles. Campbell drove in two runs.

Picklesimer went 2-for-4 with a home run and drove in three runs. Tres Gregg finished 2-for-4 with a double and drove in a run.

Mock went 1-for-4 at the plate with a solo homer. Mock also started on the mound and earned the win after giving up two runs on five hits with a season-high 12 strikeouts and two walks in five innings.

Carey Emmerke struck out two batters in the sixth inning before Jackson Hyde and Alex Dean closed out the game in the seventh inning.
