Junior first baseman Heath Peterson and freshman pitcher Alex Guilford of the University of Montevallo baseball team were recently named the Peach Belt Conference Player and Freshman of the Week, respectively.

Peterson and Guilford helped power the Falcons to two wins last week, including their first Peach Belt Conference win of the season over Columbus State University.

This is the first Player of the Week award for Peterson and the team this season.

Peterson hit .444 with four home runs and nine RBIs as the Falcons split their four games. The junior had multiple hits in all four games with at least one RBI in each contest.

In a three-game series at Columbus State, he hit .461 with three home runs and five RBIs. In the opener, he was 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and three RBIs. Peterson also homered in the series finale. For the week, he was 3-for-3 in stolen bases and did not commit an error at first in 25 chances. He is currently tied for second in the league in home runs and is fourth in slugging percentage.

This is also the first Freshman of the Week award for Guilford and the team this season.

Guilford went 1-0 in two appearances with a 1.23 earned run average in 7 1/3 innings pitched. He picked up Montevallo’s first conference win of the season with six innings of four-hit ball at Columbus State, allowing one earned run and striking out a pair. He issued only one walk in that game and retired seven of the final eight batters he faced.

Guilford had 1 1/3 innings of relief work against Alabama-Huntsville, not allowing a hit and striking out two. The freshman is now 3-2 with a 4.73 earned run average on the season and is 15th in the PBC in innings pitched.
