Montevallo women close out spring break with three matches

The University of Montevallo women’s tennis team played three matches in the last four days to close out their spring break road trip March 17-20.

The Falcons (3-14 overall, 0-9 in Peach Belt Conference) opened the four-day period with a 9-0 loss at Francis Marion University. Montevallo then took down Converse College 5-4 before falling to Georgia College 9-0.

The Falcons picked up singles’ wins from junior Helene Nordgreen, senior Calli Robinson and sophomore Amy McGucken against Converse.

Freshman Kayla Hackett, a Chelsea graduate, and senior Kodi Bobo teamed up to win the No. 2 doubles’ match, while McGucken and freshman Yulia Shvetsova won the No. 3 doubles’ match.

Nordgreen won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Robinson won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles and McGucken won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Hackett and Bobo rolled at No. 2 doubles 8-1, while McGucken and Shvetsova had to go to a tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles before winning 9-8 (7-4).

Against Francis Marion, Nordgreen won a game against the 35th-ranked player in the country before losing 6-0, 6-1.

McGucken led the team with four game wins, losing 6-2, 6-2. Nordgreen and Robinson won a game against the fifth-ranked doubles team in the country before losing 8-1 at No. 1 doubles.

Against Georgia College, Bobo came within a set of winning her match. She fell 6-4, 2-6, 10-6. McGucken was the only other Montevallo player to even win a game in the match before falling 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
