Thompson sweeps baseball doubleheader at Tuscaloosa County

The Thompson High School baseball team picked up a doubleheader sweep against Tuscaloosa County in high school baseball action March 22.

The Warriors ran their record to 18-7 on the season with a 2-1, 8-5 sweep of Tuscaloosa County

In a 2-1 victory in the first game Jonathan Keller (3-2) threw a complete game three-hitter, allowing one earned run with nine strikeouts and two walks.

The Wildcats scored their only run in the bottom of the first inning, but the Warriors quickly answered to tie the game in the top of the second inning when Andrew Smith hit a deep sacrifice fly to left field to drive home Skylar Estell and tie the game at 1-1.

After a scoreless third inning, the Warriors scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the fourth inning when Ian Murray led off with a double to left field and Alex Henderson drove him home with a sharp single to right field to give Thompson a 2-1 advantage.

The Wildcats loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Keller struck out the final batter to end the game.

Gus Williford led Thompson at the plate as he finished 2-for-3. Alex Henderson was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Andrew Smith drove in a run with the sacrifice fly.

In an 8-5 win in the nightcap, the Warriors scored two runs in the top of the first inning when Alex Henderson drove home Alex Carter and Taylor Bria with a single to left field.

The Warriors scored two more runs in the top of the second inning. Andrew Smith and Tyler Gamble singled and were advanced to second and third base on a sacrifice bunt by Conner Gill. Taylor Bria walked to load the bases before Ian Murray and Alex Henderson both drove in runs with bases-loaded walks to put Thompson up 4-1 after two innings.

Thompson went up 5-1 in the third when Conner Gill drove home Andrew Smith with a double to left field.

Both teams were scoreless in the fourth inning. Thompson scored again in the top of the fifth inning, as Michael Schofield led off with a single and scored when Conner Gill drove home his second run of the night with an RBI single to left field to give the Warriors a 6-1 lead.

Thompson scored its final two runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Blake Gruber led off with a single to left field. With two outs, Michael Schofield and Andrew Smith walked and Adam McKenzie drove home two runs with a line-drive single to left field.

Alex Henderson finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs and two walks. Conner Gill was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Adam McKenzie was 1-for-2 and drove in two runs.

Mason Morris (5-0) got the win for the Warriors after pitching four innings, allowing one earned run on three hits with four strikeouts and four walks.

Aron McRee pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts and five walks. Jake Hester picked up his second save of the season after pitching the final 1 1/3 innings with three strike outs and one walk and no hits.
