Falcons drop two games against Armstrong Atlantic in doubleheader

The University of Montevallo baseball team dropped the final two games of a three-game series March 26 against Armstrong Atlantic State University by the score of 9-4 in Peach Belt Conference action.

The first game featured numerous lighting delays, as well as a tornado delay, which made the game last five hours and 19 minutes.

Montevallo (14-15 overall, 4-8 in Peach Belt Conference) was led on the day by senior Josh Dabbs, who was 4-for-8 at the plate with three doubles and a run scored.

Junior Josh Headley, freshman Will Fulmer, junior Duston Daugherty and junior Chris Ross, a Pelham graduate, all registered three hits on the day.

Headley was 3-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored. Fulmer was 3-for-7 with an RBI and a run scored. Daugherty, who drove in a run and scored a run, was 3-for-8 with a triple. Ross was 3-for-8 with a run scored.

Senior Scott Deason, a Spain Park graduate, chipped in an RBI as he went 1-for-4. Junior Blaine Rosenberg, an Oak Mountain graduate, had a team-high four RBIs as he hit a grand slam in the first inning of the second game in the doubleheader.

Senior Kyle Butler started on the mound for the Falcons in game one and took home the loss as he went 5 2/3 innings with a pair of strikeouts and no walks. Butler’s record fell to 3-3 on the season. Freshman Alex Guilford started in game two and went five innings with three strikeouts and a walk. Freshman Edward Brandsema came in and pitched 2/3 of an inning with a strikeout and a walk. Brandsema took home the loss as he gave up the go-ahead run, dropping his record to 0-1 on the season.

The Pirates jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the first at bat after opening the game with a lead-off home run.

Montevallo answered in the third inning as Fulmer hit an RBI single to left field, which scored freshman Pablo Martell. The Pirates tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead. Armstrong Atlantic scored five runs in the sixth inning, including two before a long lightning/tornado delay and then three more when the game resumed.

Montevallo answered with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning. Headley hit an RBI sacrifice fly, which scored Dubberly. Daugherty had an RBI triple, which scored Dabbs, and Deason followed with an RBI single to plate Daugherty.

The Pirates scored another run in the eighth inning.

In game two, it was the Falcons who jumped out early as Rosenberg hit a grand slam in his first at bat in the first inning.

The Pirates responded with nine unanswered runs.
