FROM STAFF REPORTS

The Chelsea High School boys’ soccer team grabbed sole possession of first place in Class 5A, Section 3 play April 5 as the Hornets defeated rival Sylacauga 3-1.

Chelsea came out strong in the first half with two apparent goals that were waived off with offsides infractions. However, Sylacauga fought back and grabbed the lead late in the first half when Adolfo Gamino got onto a timely cross and punched in a goal to give Sylacauga the 1-0 lead. That score would hold until halftime.

Chelsea came out strong again in the second half. This time the effort paid off as Will Bevill received a chipped ball from Dakota Dresbach in the left side of the box, where he cut to his right and drilled a shot into the top left netting. Several minutes later, Chelsea senior Ashley Page gathered a deflected ball at the top of the box and hit a shot past Sylacauga keeper Eric Frost to give the Hornets a 2-1 lead. Midway through the half, Bevill connected a pass to Page, who delivered the insurance goal to seal the victory.

Chelsea goalkeeper Josh Carpenter finished with two saves.
