FROM STAFF REPORTS

The University of Montevallo baseball team dropped a pair of one-run games at Flagler College in Peach Belt Conference action April 9.

The Falcons (17-19 overall, 6-11 in Peach Belt Conference) fell in 10 innings during game one 4-3 before dropping the nightcap 2-1.

Montevallo was led by senior Scott Deason, a Spain Park graduate, and sophomore Austin Dubberly, a Pelham graduate, who each went 3-for-7 at the plate in the doubleheader.

Deason had all three of his hits in game one, while Dubberly had two in game one and one in game two. Deason had the only extra base hit for the Falcons with a double, while Dubberly led the team with two RBIs.

Freshman Justin Burgess and junior Chris Ross, a Pelham graduate, each had a pair of hits on the day. Freshman Will Fulmer and senior Josh Dabbs provided the only other RBIs for the Falcons as they had one each.

Sophomore Will Dismukes started game one on the mound and went 6 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and a walk and allowed one run.

Dismukes was replaced by junior Brett Roney, who went 1/3 of an inning with a strikeout and a walk and gave up one run. Freshman Edward Brandsema pitched the next 1 1/3 innings with no walks, no strikeouts and no hits given up. The final Montevallo pitcher in game one was junior Wes Rich, a Pelham graduate, who went 1 1/3 innings with five hits and two runs given up, one of which was earned. Rich (1-2) suffered the loss on the mound.

In game two, it was all senior Kyle Butler as he went the full eight innings. Butler walked just one while scattering seven hits. Butler gave up two runs, which proved to be enough, as he suffered his fourth loss of the season bringing his record to 4-4 on the year.

In game one, Montevallo struck first in the third inning. Dubberly smacked an RBI single to right field, which scored Deason, who had reached on a single to the shortstop to lead off the inning. Montevallo struck again in the fifth inning as Dabbs hit an RBI groundout to second base, which scored Burgess, who had reached on a single up the middle to lead off the inning.

The Saints got on the board for the first time in the sixth inning as they scored a single run to cut the Falcons lead to just one run. Montevallo responded with a run in the seventh inning as Dubberly once again hit an RBI single, this time up the middle. Deason once again scored as he led off the inning with a double to right centerfield.

Flagler immediately retaliated with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to once again cut the Falcons lead to one run. Flagler eventually tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning with two two-out singles to score the game-tying run. Flagler then scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 10th inning on a squeeze bunt to clinch the victory.

In game two, Flagler scored a single run in the second and sixth innings to take a 2-0 lead.

Montevallo finally tallied a run in the eighth inning as Fulmer hit an RBI groundout to first base, which scored Dabbs, who had reached on single up the middle to lead off the inning. Montevallo was unable to tack on anymore runs in the eighth or ninth inning in the nightcap.

The Falcons return to action April 10 at noon as they continue their series with Flagler College.
