Thompson splits baseball doubleheader

The Thompson High School baseball team split a doubleheader with St. Xavier High School (Ky.) and Grissom in high school baseball action April 9.

Thompson fell to St. Xavier of Louisville, Ky., 5-3 in the opener.

Chad Collum led the Warriors (22-12) at the plate as he finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and drove in a run.

Gus Williford went 1-for-4 with a double and drove in a run. Austin Carter finished 1-for-3 and scored a run. Adam McKenzie finished 1-for-3 at the plate. Matt Haskins scored one run.

Aron McRee started on the mound and allowed just one hit with two strikeouts in two innings of work.

Conner Gill took the loss after giving up four runs, including three earned runs, on three hits with five strikeouts in three innings in relief. Jake Hester allowed one earned run on one hit with one walk in one inning on the mound.

The Warriors snapped a five-game losing streak with 10-9 victory over Grissom in the nightcap.

Ian Murray, a Berry College commitment, had a huge night at the plate for the Warriors as he hit for the cycle. Murray was unstoppable at the plate and did what few players have done when he homered in the second inning, tripled in the third inning, doubled in the fifth inning and singled in the seventh inning. Murray drove in two runs and scored three runs in the victory.

Matt Haskins finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Taylor Bria, Williford, McKenzie, Jonathan Keller, Gill and Carter finished with one hit each.

Keller drove in two runs. Haskins, who scored three runs, and Williford drove in one run each.

Skylar Estell (2-1) picked up the win in relief. Estell pitched 1 1/3 innings and did not give up any runs on two hits with three strikeouts.
