FROM STAFF REPORTS

University of Montevallo senior Emily Gibson was recently named the 2010-2011 Peach Belt Conference women’s Golfer of the Year for the second straight year.

The Peach Belt Conference has only given out a women’s Golfer of the Year Award twice in its storied history and Gibson has been the recipient of both those awards.

With Gibson’s Golfer of the Year award last season, she became the first Montevallo athlete in any sport to be named a Player of the Year in the Peach Belt Conference. Gibson now has the distinction of being the only Montevallo athlete to be named Player of the Year in the PBC and the only one to have won a Player of the Year award twice.

The Toronto, Ontario native had another stellar season for the Montevallo program, collecting two wins with a second and a third-place finish.

Gibson was fifth in the Peach Belt Conference in stroke average at 77.5. Gibson had four rounds of 75 or less, including back-to-back rounds of 72 at Birmingham-Southern College’s Southern Shootout, where she finished third overall in the 90-player field.

Gibson was tied for first overall at the Montevallo Invitational and won Birmingham-Southern College’s Ann Rhoads Invitational. Gibson also finished second overall at the West Georgia Invitational, Montevallo’s most recent event heading into the Peach Belt Conference Championships, where she is the defending champion.

Gibson will lead the Falcons into battle April 11-12 at the Peach Belt Conference tournament in Pooler, Ga.
