Vassie Gaborik, age 80, passed away on Friday, April 1, 2011. She was born in Florida on January 23, 1931, the daughter of Richard and Rosa Burkett. She attended First Baptist Alabaster church and was a member of the Ruth Sunday school class. She also loved to play dominoes and enjoyed the friendships and fellowships that she shared with her class members and her friends. She was a member of the Shelby County Art Association and won numerous awards for her watercolors. She especially loved her family and her extended family and was a guiding force and loving part of each of them. She will be greatly missed, but her family rejoices to know that she is in heaven today with the Lord Jesus Christ and that she has been reunited with those who went before her. Her wit and her candor and her great passion for life left a lasting impression with us all and will live on in us to honor her memory.

She is survived by her husband, Lincoln Peter Gaborik; daughter, Annette Authement (Gary); sons, Curtis Edwards (Kathleen), Lt. Col. Gregory Edwards, (Ret) (Lynn), Richard Edwards (Lisa) and Chuck Tomassie; brother, Olan Burkett (Almeda); sister, Ozie McCrone; grandson, Christopher Authement (Brenda); granddaughter, Brandi Authement Walker (Sloan); grandson, Brian Authement (Courtney); granddaughter, Emily Edwards; grandson, Keagen Edwards; grandson, Colton Edwards; granddaughter, Julie Tomassie Lindsey (Brian); grandson, Eric Tomassie; great-grandsons, Alex Authement and Will Authement; great-granddaughter, Lynleigh Golden; and great-grandson, Major Walker.

Visitation was held on Sunday, April 3, 2011, from 6-8 p.m. at Charter Funeral Home. Funeral services were held on Monday, April 4, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the burial to follow in the Alabama National Cemetery. Reverend Michael McVay of First Baptist Alabaster officiated. Music was by Brother Mike Byers, also of First Baptist Alabaster. Arrangements were under the direction of Charter Funeral Home.
