The University of Montevallo baseball team suffered two come-from-behind losses to Georgia College and State University in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader April 16.

The Falcons (18-22 overall, 6-14 in Peach Belt Conference) fell in game one 15-9 and lost the nightcap 8-7 to Georgia College, which entered the doubleheader ranked No. 24 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II poll.

Montevallo led 6-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning in game one before the Bobcats used 12 runs to storm past the Falcons late in the game. The Falcons then led 7-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning in the second game, but the Bobcats once again used four runs in the final inning to take the victory.

The Falcons were led at the plate by senior Scott Deason, a Spain Park graduate, who was 5-for-10 on the day with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.

Freshman Justin Burgess was 3-for-7 with a double and three runs scored. Junior Heath Peterson and freshman Will Fulmer led the Falcons in RBIs with four each. Peterson had an all-around day as he was 3-for-9 with three runs scored, a double, a triple, a home run and a walk. Fulmer was 2-for-8 with a run scored and four RBIs.

Junior Chris Ross, a Pelham graduate, also had three hits as he was 3-for-10 with three runs scored and a double. Freshman Pablo Martell chipped in three RBIs off of two hits, including a triple. Sophomore Austin Dubberly, a Pelham graduate, was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, a run scored and an RBI.

On the mound, sophomore Will Dismukes got the start in game one. He went four innings with four strikeouts and four walks while allowing five runs off of seven hits.

Junior Brett Roney (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season as he allowed three runs off of two hits and a walk without recording an out in relief. Three Montevallo pitchers split the final four innings while giving up seven runs.

Senior Kyle Butler started game two, pitching seven innings while striking out two and walking a pair. Butler scattered six hits and allowed four runs, including three earned runs, before leaving the game with the Falcons ahead 7-4.

Junior Wes Rich, a Pelham graduate, pitched the next inning while allowing one run on one hit. The final pitcher for the Falcons was Deason, who allowed three runs off of three hits and one walk. Deason didn’t record an out as his record dropped to 0-2.

The Falcons broke out early in game one as they scored three runs in the first inning. Ross opened the game with a single and was followed by a double from Dubberly. Ross scored on a passed ball and then Dubberly scored on an RBI groundout by Fulmer. Peterson stepped up with a triple to right field and was eventually brought home on a two-out single from Deason.

The Bobcats scored a single run in the bottom half, but Montevallo matched it with a run of its own in the second. Dubberly drove in the Falcons’ fourth run of the game in his second at bat, as Burgess scored on a two-out single to left field.

The Bobcats scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut Montevallo’s lead to just one run. The Falcons matched the two runs in the fifth inning, as Peterson and junior Blaine Rosenberg, an Oak Mountain graduate, had back-to-back RBI doubles.

Georgia College took control of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning as it scored five runs off of five hits to take an 8-6 lead. Georgia College added two runs in the sixth and five more runs in the seventh inning to open up a 15-6 lead.

The Falcons had one last blast of offense in the eighth inning as they scored three runs.

Fulmer picked up an RBI on a bases-loaded walk to score the first run of the inning. Peterson then drove in a run on a fielder’s choice. The final run scored on an error by the third baseman, which plated Martell.

In game two, neither team scored in the opening two innings. Montevallo finally broke through in the third inning, as Ross scored on an RBI groundout from Fulmer. Georgia College also woke up in the third inning, as the Bobcats scored three runs in the bottom half.

The Bobcats added another run in the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Montevallo cut into the lead in the fifth inning with a pair of runs off a two-run, two-out home run from Peterson.

Montevallo eventually tied the game in the seventh inning, as Fulmer hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Deason. The Falcons held their second lead of the game when Martell hit a bases-loaded triple to right center to give Montevallo a 7-4 lead.

The Falcons were unable to hold that lead, as the Bobcats scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to take the victory.

Montevallo will return to action Sunday, April 17 at noon as it continues the series with Georgia College.
