Briarwood Christian wins section tennis title

The Briarwood Christian School boys’ tennis team won the an Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A section tournament championship April 18 and qualified for the state tournament.

The Lions will compete for the AHSAA Class 5A championship April 28-29 at Lagoon Park in Montgomery.

Briarwood Christian was represented in each of the singles’ and doubles’ championship matches in the section tournament, with the Lions capturing five singles’ titles and all three doubles’ championships.

Griffin Russell of Briarwood Christian defeated Jeremy McIntosh of Moody 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles’ championship match. Taylor Brewton of Briarwood Christian defeated Will Killough of Sylacauga 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 3 singles’ title match.

Russell Hancock of Briarwood Christian defeated Andrew Collins of Sylacauga 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 4 singles’ championship match. The Lions’ Philip Taylor defeated Tyler Mitchell of Sylacauga 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 5 singles’ championship match.

Devin Bowman of Briarwood Christian defeated Collin Minor of Sylacauga 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 6 singles’ title match. Matt Nichols of Briarwood Christian fell to Jonathan Vick of Sylacauga 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles’ championship match.

Nichols and Brewton of Briarwood Christian defeated Collins and Vick of Sylacauga 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 1 doubles’ championship match. The Lions’ Russell and Hancock defeated McIntosh and Conner Butz of Moody 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 2 doubles’ championship match.

Taylor and Bowman of Briarwood Christian defeated Will Killough and Cary Kimber of Sylacauga 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 3 doubles’ championship match.
