Big innings haunt Falcons in loss to UAH

The University of Montevallo baseball team allowed a four-run first inning and a five-run fourth inning in a 10-7 loss to the University of Alabama in Huntsville on the road April 20.

Montevallo (18-24) was led by junior Heath Peterson, who went 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run. Peterson drove in three runs and scored two runs in the defeat.

Sophomore Andrew Hill, a Pelham graduate, was 1-for-2 with a triple. Hill drove in two runs and scored one run.

Senior Scott Deason, a Spain Park graduate, and sophomore Devon Davis provided the other two RBIs for the Falcons. Deason was 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Davis, who was 0-for-3 at the plate, drove in one run.

Junior Brett Roney started on the mound for the Falcons on the mound and went 3 1/3 innings with no walks or strikeouts. Roney allowed 10 hits and six runs in the loss as his record fell to 2-2 on the season.

Four other Falcons combined to pitch the final 4 2/3 innings while allowing five hits and four runs. Davis led the way for the relievers, pitching one complete inning with a strikeout and no hits allowed.

UAH scored four runs in the first inning to set the tone for the game.

Montevallo finally posted two runs in the fourth inning, as Peterson hit a two-run homer to right-center field to cut the lead in half. The Chargers immediately responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 9-2 lead.

The Falcons cut into the lead in the seventh inning with three runs. Hill hit a two-run triple to left-center field, which was followed by a RBI groundout from Davis.

Montevallo made the deficit just two runs in the eighth inning with a pair of runs. Deason hit an RBI single up the middle, while Peterson had an RBI single to right field.

With Montevallo closing in, the Chargers posted an insurance run in the eighth inning and the Falcons were unable to score in the ninth inning.
