The Alabaster City Council was forced to cancel its regular meeting May 5 after it did not have the quorum necessary to call the meeting to order.

Before the council can call a meeting to order, at least four of the seven council members must be present.

Ward 3 Councilman Adam Moseley, Ward 6 Councilman Scott Brakefield and Ward 7 Councilman Tommy Ryals were present at the meeting. Ward 1 Councilwoman Sophie Martin, Ward 2 Councilman Bob Hicks, Ward 4 Councilman Rick Walters and Ward 5 Councilman and Council President Jim McClain were absent.

Most absences were due to illness or work-related travel, said Alabaster City Clerk Marsha Massey.

“This has never happened to us before,” Moseley said. “It’s a first for us.”

The council was set to vote on retail beer and table wine licenses for the Dollar General stores on Kent Dairy Road and First Street Southwest, and was set to vote on a resolution regarding the sales tax holiday in August.

The council was also set to vote on a resolution to waive business license fees during Alabaster’s CityFest June 4, and vote on a resolution regarding a memorandum of understanding with Shelby County for use of county equipment during CityFest.

The agenda also included a resolution regarding waiving the business license fees for the Pat Watcher Bowl at the Veterans Park skate park.

The council was also to decide if it would grant a road maintenance release request from Greenbriar LTD and the Farris Management Company.
